Letโs make picks for the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff.
College footballโs inaugural 12-team playoff is down to the final eight teams.
As an aside, are we going with Elite Eight for this? We have seen a passing reference or two to that term, borrowed from the NCAA basketball tournament, but it truly has yet to stick. But we digress …
But tonight the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff get underway, with No. 6 Penn State taking on No. 3 Boise State in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl.
The NFL’s final weekend will clear up a playoff picture that has remained murky in recent weeks and needs a couple of tweaks to come into full focus.
It’s going to be a busy weekend.
Four games in the AFC and three games in the NFC have playoff implications that will determine the postseason outlook for nine teams.
Five of those nine teams still have not locked down a playoff spot and are playing Saturday or Sunday to try to get into the postseason. The rest is about clinching the No.1 overall seed and home field advantage in the postseason or winning a division title.

The inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff has advanced to the quarterfinal Bowl games. Here is how to watch each game
The inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff has reached the quarterfinals, with four Bowl games playing host to the eight teams left standing.
Action kicks off on New Yearโs Eve with the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, featuring Penn State and Boise State. Then three games come your way on New Yearโs Day, starting with the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl between Texas and Arizona State.
The College Football Playoff quarterfinals are upon us and the 12-team event has moved from on-campus locations to traditional bowl sites. We will see four teams that earned byes last week, including third-seed and Mountain West Conference champion Boise State, as well as fourth-seed and Big 12 Champion Arizona State.
Are there upsets in the mix? Both of those teams are heavy underdogs against Penn State and Texas, respectively. Thus, oddsmakers seem to think that the blowouts that dotted the CFP last week could be in the mix again.
The matchup will feature the most combined wins for any regular-season game in NFL history, and there’s significant NFC playoff implications at stake.
