This week’s College Football Playoff rankings have generated controversy, to say the least. While the expanded playoff field was supposed to fix some of the issues exemplified by last season’s Alabama over Florida State decision, many of the same problems continue to persist.ย 
Opaque decision-making, nonsensical criteria, inconsistent enforcement, and the seeming benefit for some teams of avoiding a conference championship game. It’s a mess, and no one is happy.

Are we headed towards a world where playing in the conference championship game is going to cost a team a spot in the college football playoff? We might find out this weekend when SMU and Clemson battle for the ACC title, and Mustangs head coach Rhett Lashlee is trying to prepare folks for a situation that would change the sport.ย 
Coming out of the CFP rankings on Tuesday night, chairman Warde Manuel did not say no when asked whether SMU could be bumped from the rankings if they were to lose in the ACC title game.
