WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Republicans in the U.S. Congress mounted a third attempt to avert a government shutdown on Friday with only hours to spare, after two previous plans were scuttled by President-elect Donald Trump and members of their own party. Others said they would not try to win over Democrats whose support likely will be needed to extend funding past midnight Friday (0500 GMT Saturday), when it is due to expire. “We’re not working with Democrats,” Republican Representative Nancy Mace said.

When Lexie Brown won the 2021 WNBA championship with the Chicago Sky, she didn’t have much time to celebrate. That’s because less than a week later, the Duke standout had to go overseas to play professional basketball in France.
“It was kind of a bummer because that’s a moment that’s rare,” Brown told SB Nation.
Two of the NFL’s biggest stars are nursing ankle injuries this week. Patrick Mahomes has a high ankle sprain and T.J. Watt has a more mild low ankle sprain.
And both are expected to play Saturday with huge stakes riding on the game outcome for their teams. Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are trying to clinch home field advantage and a first-round bye in the playoffs, while Watt and the Pittsburgh Steelers are trying to clinch the AFC North title.
So, of course, these guys are going to hobble out there – probably.
But there are issues. And possible fallout.

CARACAS (Reuters) -One of the six Venezuelan opposition staffers who have been living at the Argentine diplomatic residence in Caracas has turned himself in to the attorney general’s office, the office said in a statement on Friday. The staffers have been at the residence since warrants were issued for their arrests in March, part of what the opposition says is a fierce government crackdown on dissent before, during and after a disputed July election, which both President Nicolas Maduro and the opposition claim to have won.
