Star quarterbacks such as Joe Burrow and Jalen Hurts could have new backups after a trio of notable signal-callers from the NFC became available due to roster cuts.
Forming a 53-man roster doesn’t necessarily mean keeping the best players. Instead, it’s about making the math work at every position and making sure there are enough quality special teams players.
Quarterbacks weren’t the only surprises from Tuesday’s roster cutdown deadline. A reliable veteran cornerback was released in New Orleans, and a former 1,000-yard rusher is again looking for a new home.

The New England Patriots made two surprising cuts Tuesday, letting quarterbacks Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham go as the team tries to get its roster to 53 players. There’s no other way to read this news than this: Bill Belichick is telling the NFL that Mac Jones is his guy, so stop asking about it.
Some speculated that Bailey Zappe might press Jones for the starting quarterback gig in New England, but that clearly did not happen. Plus, Malik Cunningham had an incredible preseason debut and the team immediately started giving him more practice reps.

Keegan Bradley is feeling down.
Heartbroken. Devastated. Crushed.
He has been overlooked for the 2023 Ryder Cup team as U.S. Captain Zach Johnson opted for six other players instead. Those who made the team include Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka.
Bradley spoke with Todd Lewis of the Golf Channel after Johnson revealed his picks.
“I am super bummed out,” Bradley said.
The Patriots released quarterback Bailey Zappe on Tuesday, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, during the latest round of roster cuts but didn’t stop there. New England also waived Malik Cunningham, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Howe, leaving Mac Jones as the lone quarterback on the Patriots roster.
Zappe was Jones’s backup last season and appeared in several games after Jones and veteran Brian Hoyer both went down with injuries.

The Colts are keeping Jonathan Taylor on the physically unable to perform list to start the season, a sign that the team will not trade the running back before Week 1, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.
Indianapolis had to decide by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday whether to trade Taylor or leave him on the PUP list, and according to Rapoport, the Colts didn’t receive an acceptable offer for Taylor. Because Taylor is still recovering from ankle surgery he underwent in the offseason, he will begin the season on the sideline.
The long awaited Colorado season opener is only four days away, as the Buffaloes will play TCU on Saturday night in primetime. If the Buffs needed any extra motivation, they certainly got it when Warren Sapp showed up to practice with coach Deion Sanders.
Sapp, who destroyed quarterbacks on a consistent basis back in his playing days, wanted a glimpse at what Coach Prime has put together. Turns out, Warren Sapp was the perfect guy to bring in to check out what the defensive line was doing.
Twins pitching prospect Cory Lewis was filmed throwing his patented knuckleball and images of the pitch were released on social media.
Baseball agent Ethan Chapman released the video of Lewis’s knuckleball to the public, and the slow motion recording is a work of art. The clip of the pitch looks like something that could be plugged into a scene in a baseball movie, or simply a screenshot that could be hung up on a wall in a local art gallery.
Take a look at the pitch for yourself from Lewis.
