MINNEAPOLIS — Perhaps it was the games of UNO on the long plane rides around the country that made the difference as the Phoenix Mercury beat the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday night in Game 2 of the WNBA semifinals. Phoenix came back from being down 20 points to win 89-83 in overtime, which tied them for the third-largest comeback in WNBA postseason history and tied the series.

SEATTLE (AP) — The surging Seattle Mariners clinched a spot in the postseason Tuesday night, but they hope the real celebrations are yet to come.
Seattle earned the playoff berth with a dramatic 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies after getting some help from the New York Yankees, who beat the Chicago White Sox earlier Tuesday evening. Josh Naylor provided the big hit, a bases-clearing double with two outs in the eighth inning after Seattle had generated little offense against the major league-worst Rockies.
The Mariners now have their eye on their first AL West title since 2001.

Tonight, the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 8-4 at Angel Stadium. Even that comfortable score was a misnomer: this was a wire-to-wire dominating performance by Kansas City, who brought an 8-2 lead into the ninth inning.
The first inning of the game was a particular blast—provided you rooted for the boys in blue as opposed to the home team. Maikel Garcia worked a full count before doubling to left field, and Bobby Witt Jr. followed with a single that moved Garcia to third base.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State starting point guard Tamin Lipsey will miss four to six weeks after injuring his knee at practice Tuesday, the school announced.
Lipsey, who sprained the medial collateral ligament in his right knee, could be back for the Cyclones’ opener against Fairleigh Dickinson on Nov. 3.
The fourth-year player from Ames has started all 103 of his career games and is the Cyclones’ all-time steals leader with 237. Last season, he averaged 10.6 points, 3.1 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game.
