Despite the windy, chilly October afternoon, hundreds of Berks County high school runners showed up to compete for a Berk County Championship on Tuesday at Kutztown University.
But only two runners could come out on top in the boys and girls divisions races. Ryan Gourley, a senior from Oley Valley, and Julia Leady, a junior from Daniel Boone, claimed the BCIAA individual championships.
After finishing third at the county’s last year, Gourley returned determined and edged out the competition with a time of 16:12, averaging a 5:13 mile pace.

The first football game for E. E. Smith High School since losing three of their own in a single-car crash was held at South View High School, and there was an emotional tribute to the players who would have participated Tuesday night. Standing shoulder to shoulder, there was a unified team entrance for both football teams as they honored the lives of Nicholas Williams, Trevor Merritt, and Jai’hyon Elliott.
“Amazing scholars and standout seniors. Everybody knew them. Just outstanding young men,” said E.E. Smith High School Principal Larry Parker.

The Washington Commanders continue attempting to tinker with their roster after a disappointing 3-3 start to the 2025 season. One day after a heartbreaking 25-24 loss to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football, the Commanders signed 2022 second-round pick Drake Jackson to the 53-man roster. A defensive end from USC, Jackson was drafted by the 49ers, but injuries derailed the early part of his career.
The Commanders could be targeting another high pick from the same draft to add depth to their roster.
