I think we all kind of knew this was the case, but now it’s officially official: NHL great Joe Thornton has retired.
While it wasn’t the most extravagant retirement announcement ever, it was perfectly on-brand for the man they call Jumbo.
On Saturday, the San Jose Sharks — the team with whom Thornton spent 15 NHL seasons — shared a video message from their old captain (even if it was taken away unceremoniously, but that’s another story).

The Purdue Boilermakers probably won’t take home many positives from their loss to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. But this insane catch from Jayden Dixon-Veal will make that list.
Facing a 3rd-and-15 from the Nebraska 29, Boilermakers quarterback Hudson Card flushed to his right and looked for options down field. Dixon-Veal scrambled to get himself open, and rushed towards the near pylon.
Card’s throw could have been a better, but Dixon-Veal didn’t care. Most receivers wouldn’t make the effort to go for this ball, but Dixon-Veal did.

Louisville’s 23–0 domination of Duke on Saturday kept the Cardinals toward the top of the pack in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship race—while simultaneously making first-year head coach Jeff Brohm richer and more secure.
The Cardinals’ seventh win of the season automatically added another year to Brohm’s contract, extending him through the 2029 season. If Louisville (7–1) gets to 10 wins this season, it will add a second bonus year to the deal and extend him through ‘30.

Just when I thought I’d seen everything in college football, the Pac-12 surprised us all during the USC-Cal game. If you thought the protest to start the game was wild, the officials decided to one-up the field stormers.
As the first half was coming to an end with USC trailing 28-17, Caleb Williams threw up a pass that was caught with what looked like one-second remaining. Unfortunately for the officiating crew, they did not figure this out until the marching band had taken the field.

In the course of dispatching Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday afternoon, Jackson State made college football history.
With 5:25 left in the second quarter, Tigers kicker Leilani Armenta booted an extra point to put Jackson State up 23–0, making her the first woman to score in an HBCU football game at the Division I level. She wound up hitting two more PATs as the Tigers cruised to a 40–14 win.
Armenta, a freshman, plays as a defender for Jackson State’s women’s soccer team. She attended high school at St. Bonaventure in Ventura, Calif.

While basking in the glory of upsetting Clemson 24–17, NC State coach Dave Doeren used the moment to call out ESPN’s College GameDay guest picker Steve Smith for picking against his team.
During Saturday’s pick segment, the former NFL wideout said that despite the Tigers’ pedestrian season, with a 4–3 record entering the showdown, Wolfpack fans were looking more towards the basketball season.
“Clemson has been struggling. They’re not the Clemson that we’ve loved over the years.

Down goes Clemson — again. This time, at the hands of the NC State Wolfpack and their fiery coach, Dave Doeren.
After his team took down the Tigers Saturday afternoon, the longtime coach had some choice words for the doubters.
Well, one particular doubter: Former Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith Sr.
“Tell Steve Smith in the studio this ain’t a basketball school,” Doeren said. “He can kiss my ass.”
