As the franchise window opens Tuesday, we break down which teams have the cap wiggle room to lock up key players.
With 15 teams currently over the NFL’s salary cap, expect another year in which the franchise tag is scarcely applied. No team wants to use the franchise tag because of the costly cap hit for one player, but it’s an option for buying more time to agree on a long-term contract extension that would limit the cap hit in 2023.
Last year, eight players were tagged during the franchise-tag window and only four played under it.

Matt Araiza, the former Buffalo Bills punter who was released in 2022 following gang rape allegations, is still searching for a new football home. The 22-year-old was reportedly set to sign with a professional team in Mexico, but that didn’t come to fruition.
Galgos de Tijuana, the team Araiza was expected to sign with, shared a post to Instagram welcoming him to the team last week. While the post is still public, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has since stated that the punter’s agent said Araiza did not sign with the team and is hoping for another NFL opportunity in the near future.

Let’s rank every team in the NBA by their chances of winning the championship this season.
The front-runner to win the NBA championship usually isn’t a point of much debate this late in the season. The NBA has always been a top-heavy league throughout its history: there is usually a clear-cut best team, and that team usually wins the title.
That is not the case this year, and it might not be the case anytime soon as the NBA has taken steps to achieve the parity seen in the NFL and MLB.
Deion Sanders has officially killed the old ways at Colorado.
Sanders is making serious waves with the Buffaloes before coaching a single game in Boulder, and he recognizes there’s a lot of work that needs to be done.
One of the biggest obstacles he faces is how people at Colorado might have gotten used to low expectations. That’s no longer the case. What might have been tolerated under previous regimes absolutely won’t be tolerated under his leadership.
“It’s a whole different level of expectation around here, and you got to be able to play the game.
Houston football coach Dana Holgorsen has a bold staffing strategy for the 2023 season.
The Cougars went 8-5 last season, and things were chaotic at points during the season to say the least. UH fans expected a lot better after facing lofty expectations to open the season, but Holgorsen and the team just couldn’t get things firing on all cylinders.
Well, he’s now going to seemingly run the offense himself in 2023. Holgorsen won’t replace former OC Shannon Dawson after he left for Miami, according to Mark Berman.
With the free agent signing period looming, here are the top fantasy players that could be on the market.
The NFL’s offseason calendar began on February 13, with the start of the 2023 waiver wire system and the first business day after Super Bowl LVII. Teams can next designate their franchise or transition players starting on February 21 and ending at 4 p.m. ET on March 7. During this period of time, the NFL Scouting Combine (Feb. 28-March 6) will also occur at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
The Dallas Cowboys apparently have some interest in C.J. Stroud ahead of the NFL draft.
Stroud lit it up during his career at Ohio State, and while he failed to find much postseason success, he was still a dominant college QB.
There’s also a very high chance Stroud comes off the board in the top five picks. Dallas doesn’t draft 26 and already has Dak Prescott on a huge deal.

Yet, that apparently hasn’t stopped Jerry Jones’ franchise from taking a look at the former Buckeyes gunslinger.
Mets owner Steve Cohen went on a spending spree this offseason, in part because he needs more time to build up the club’s farm system.
The school announced Keeler’s passing on Monday evening.
The UNLV football program announced Monday evening that defensive end Ryan Keeler had died. He was 20 years old.
Keeler had just completed his redshirt freshman season for the Rebels after transferring from Rutgers. A native of Chicago, he played in seven games during the 2022 season, recording his first career sack on Oct. 15 against Air Force.
“We are devastated to have lost a member of our Rebel family,” UNLV coach Barry Odom said in a statement.
New York learned last year that a massive payroll and 101 wins didn’t matter in the playoffs, but it’ll try again with some shiny new parts and maybe better intangibles.
