Before he became heavyweight champion of the world, Joe Louis’s mother forced him to play the violin. Or so she thought. She handed over a quarter a week for lessons. But he never showed up, choosing to train at the gym nearby instead.
In 1933, Louis entered his first Golden Gloves tournament. After he notched a couple upsets, his best friend’s mother congratulated his mom on her son’s boxing success. She had no idea. “And that was the first fight Joe ever had with his mother,” says a man with almost three-quarters of a century’s worth of sports history in his head.

Not all baseball ejections are created equal. During Thursday’s game between the Nationals and Diamondbacks, Washington manager Dave Martinez made the most of his run-in with home plate umpire Doug Eddings.
And the best part of all? Microphones from the game’s broadcast captured nearly the entire very-NSFW exchange.
With one out in the top of the fifth inning, Eddings called Jake Irvin’s first pitch ball to Arizona’s Carson Kelly a ball. The call drew some critical shouts from the Nationals dugout, which immediately drew the ire of Eddings, who removed his mask to shout back.

Bo Jackson had an iconic moment or two throughout his incredible playing days. The dual-sport athlete was a dynamic NFL running back and MLB outfielder and in his days of retirement he has quite the sense of humor about it all.
The 60-year-old was on Twitter when he saw an account post a video of the iconic moment when Jackson snapped a bat in two while playing for the Royals. Apparently, Wednesday marked the 34th anniversary of the moment and Jackson had some fun reminiscing.
“I wouldn’t allow that bat to betray anyone else ever again,” Jackson wrote in the tweet.
Days after being traded from Phoenix to Washington, the veteran All-Star is reportedly being sent to Golden State for Jordan Poole and draft picks.
