Former Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright knows a thing or two about the dog days of summer—this is a man, after all, who went 30-13 with a 2.89 ERA in July during his storied career.
However, Wainwright’s retirement has given whole new meaning to the term for the 200-game winner.
At his retirement ceremony before St. Louis’s 4-3 victory over the Reds in its season finale Oct. 1, the Cardinals presented Wainwright and his family with a Lagotto Romagnolo puppy.

The 76ers and Clippers came to terms on a trade to send James Harden to Los Angeles seemingly out of nowhere on Tuesday morning at roughly 2 a.m. ET. And if it felt as though the deal was abrupt and a bit random, that may have had something to do with how the whole thing reportedly finally came together.
Philadelphia and Los Angeles owners Josh Harris and Steve Ballmer apparently got on a call Monday to “iron out the trade” that would eventually send Harden to the Clippers, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

The Bills have been ravaged with defensive injuries this season, but on Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, they replenished one position.
In a move with the Packers, Buffalo general manager Brandon Beane sent a 2024 third-round pick to Green Bay, in exchange for corner Rasul Douglas and a ’24 fifth-rounder. Douglas has this year and next remaining on his contract, at cap hits of $571,764 and $6.25 million.

Douglas has been vocal about the Packers’ slow start to the season.

Many blockbuster trades went down before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET NFL trade deadline.
The Commanders traded their two standout edge rushers Chase Young and Montez Sweat to get a head start on the many changes that are expected with new team ownership. But, surprisingly, only one went to a contending team.
Chicago probably would have been better off staying quiet for the league’s trade deadline, but it at least drastically improved its defensive front with Sweat.

The Commanders traded both of their standout edge rushers, Sweat and Young.

McIlroy will start his 2024 golf season in the Middle East as he will play in two DP World Tour events in January.
Rory McIlroy will begin his 2024 season overseas as he will play in back-to-back DP World Tour events in Dubai.
First up for McIlroy will be the inaugural Dubai Invitational. Then, the 24-time PGA Tour winner will eye another title at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
“I’m really excited to start my year at the Dubai Invitational,” McIlroy said per Sky Sports.

Let’s call it bittersweet. Daniel Snyder is gone, and so we can love and appreciate the work being done by active war-torn members of the Commanders’ franchise. Ron Rivera and Eric Bieniemy got the most out of this roster and the entirety of this sordid situation and were rewarded with a gentle nudge off the cliff as trade deadline time approached.
Both Chase Young and Montez Sweat are gone, and now Rivera will have to field questions about his potential demise for the rest of the year and about why he wasn’t allowed to keep players who could help him win.

Today’s typical sports fan, like today’s coach and executive, is more sophisticated than ever before. Statistics are better and more readily accessible. Positional value and cost-benefit analysis are part of every intelligent conversation about major roster moves. Reasonable fans understand that no team nails every move and that most teams don’t win championships. But fans at least want to see the logic behind an approach. This is what must make it so frustrating to be a Bears fan right now.

There are words for what’s happening with the Washington Commanders today: Fire sale.
The Commanders are trading defensive end Chase Young to the San Francisco 49ers, a source confirmed moments ago for OutKick. The news was first reported by FOX Sports.
The 49ers are giving Washington a 2024 third-round pick for Young.
This trade of Washington’s 2020 first-round draft pick comes mere minutes after the team’s trade of Montez Sweat, their 2019 first-round draft pick, to the Chicago Bears. That trade from one struggling team to another raised some eyebrows around the NFL.
