It’s been an eventful few days for Boston Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras. On Monday night he was ejected after tapping his helmet to initiate a mock replay review after being ruled out on a check swing. That incident was small potatoes compared to the one that took place Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
Contreras took issue with some trash talk being delivered by Washington Nationals pitcher Cade Cavalli, who yelled “sit down, boy” after striking the ejection-prone batter in the fourth inning.

Serena Williams’ Wimbledon appearance in women’s doubles with sister Venus is in doubt because of a knee injury.
The 44-year-old made her return in singles after nearly four years away on Tuesday night to a rapturous Centre Court reception.
Williams produced a strong display before fading in a 6-3 6-7 (6) 6-3 loss to 20-year-old Australian Maya Joint.
There had been no indication during the match that the 23-time grand slam singles champion had hurt herself but she did not attend the customary post-match press conference, instead issuing a short quote.

Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior has completed a £14.6 million ($19.3 million) move to Porto.
The 26-year-old spent last season on loan with Porto and played 36 times across all competitions as the Portuguese side secured a domestic title.
Porto have exercised an option to keep Kiwior on a permanent deal from Arsenal with a possible £4.3 million in add-ons.
Kiwior made the move to north London for £17.3 million from Italian side Spezia in January 2023, and went on to play 63 games for the Gunners.

Atlanta Braves right-hander AJ Smith-Shawver returned to the lineup card and made a rehab appearance for the Augusta GreenJackets on Tuesday evening. He underwent Tommy John surgery a little over a year ago and is ramping up just in time to contribute to the struggling Braves’ rotation.

The 25-year-old scored for Japan in their World Cup last-32 defeat to Brazil, a moment that has amplified attention from Europe’s biggest clubs.
He is far from a Liverpool exclusive, however. Japanese outlet Nikkan Sports reports that Arsenal, Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund are all tracking the midfielder too, setting up a genuinely competitive race.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola could gather momentum as the Premier League club weigh up alternatives to Morgan Rogers, with Liverpool also continuing to monitor developments surrounding the Paris Saint-Germain winger.

Krépin Diatta (27) has left AS Monaco following the expiry of his deal with the Principality club, it was confirmed on Tuesday.
Diatta joined Les Monégasques from Club Brugge back in 2021 for a €16m fee. His versatility saw him feature 22 times last season in what was his final campaign at the Stade Louis II.
