Shohei Ohtani had been in the midst of one of the greatest seasons in baseball history.
Ohtani’s been 81% better than an average hitter, with a whopping 44 home runs along with a .305/.408/.665 batting line. Combined with his well above average baserunning, that’s put Ohtani alone at the top of the American League WAR rankings.
As a hitter.
But Shohei’s one of the league’s best pitchers too, with a 3.14 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 132 innings. His unique, to say the least, level of ability was widely expected to make him the most valuable free agent in history after the season.

The college football season opened with Notre Dame and Navy facing off in Ireland on Saturday, as the Brian Newberry era officially began for the Midshipmen. While the new Navy coach is trying to modernize the offense besides just the triple option, the Midshipmen pass game seems to need work.
Navy’s first pass of the season came on a fourth-and-3 in Notre Dame territory, but quarterback Tai Lavatai threw the ball in between two receivers. The pass fell incomplete as both Navy players unsuccessfully went for the ball, leading to a turnover on downs.

The fight game got started early on Saturday morning in UFC Fight Night: Singapore, with two of the UFC’s best squaring off in Max “Blessed” Holloway and Chan Sung Jong, the “Korean Zombie.”
After a back and forth fight, the main event headed to the third round when suddenly Max found himself on the receiving end of some combo punches until he brilliant and beautifully took all his power and cracked Zombie with a perfect right hand to knock him out cold.
The impressive victory would send Korean Zombie into retirement after a lengthy career that ended with a 17-8 fight record.

College football is finally back after seven months, and fans of Notre Dame and Navy were THRILLED to tune into NBC to hear Jason Garrett.
Just kidding! The ex-Dallas Cowboys coach pissed everyone almost immediately on today’s telecast and did his best to ruin the return of the most glorious time of year.
That’s not me talking, Jason. Don’t shoot the messenger!

Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman got his first start as the Irish starting quarterback on Saturday in Dublin, while also wearing a body part around his neck. Yes, you read that right, which stems from two surgeries the former Wake Forest QB had to undergo last season.
Hartman transferred to South Bend this past offseason after four years at Wake Forest, but his path to play in 2022 was complicated. He was diagnosed with a blood clot just prior to the season, forcing him to undergo multiple surgeries to fix the problem.

Before trading Trey Lance to the Cowboys, the 49ers reportedly discussed the quarterback’s availability with three other teams, including two AFC playoff contenders, leading up to Friday’s stunning deal.
According to The Athletic’s Diana Russini, the Bills and Ravens had “conversations” with San Francisco about a possible deal for Lance, the No. 3 pick in 2021, while the Lions also “showed interest” in the move.

On the heels of ending a lengthy holdout with the Raiders, Josh Jacobs wasted little time firing fans up for the season by sharing an epic statement, channeling the iconic words of the one and only Michael Jordan.
The star Raiders running back took to X, formerly known as Twitter, on Saturday to sound the alarm for his impending return moments after NFL Network broke the news of the one-year extension he inked worth up to $12 million.

NASCAR Cup Series driver Kurt Busch has officially announced his retirement.
This comes about 10 months after the 45-year-old announced he was stepping away from full-time competition. This was due to lingering issues with a concussions following a crash at Pocono last season.
However, he never used the word “retire” until Saturday afternoon ahead of the Coke Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona.
Busch posted a video with his announcement and a thank you message to his social media accounts.

On Friday night, the James family announced that Bronny James had been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect that was the “probable cause” of his cardiac arrest at a July practice. While James is still receiving treatment, the family released a statement that said James’s doctors are “very confident in Bronny’s full recovery and return to basketball in the very near future.

Busch hasn’t raced since suffering a concussion at Pocono in July of 2022.
