By walking away from the tournament without a title, the Crimson Tide sacrificed its institutional integrity for a meager Sweet 16 run.
LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Alabama ran into the wrong team at the wrong time.
The team is San Diego State. The time is the NCAA tournament Sweet 16. The context was the stunning ending to the No. 1 overall seed’s quest to win a national championship that would have left much of the nation holding its nose or averting its gaze.
So, yeah. Wrong team at the wrong time.

Purdue, Kansas, Alabama and Houston have all been bounced early.
The 2023 men’s NCAA tournament has already etched its name into history as one of the most chaotic tournaments in recent memory.
With No. 5 seed Miami upsetting No. 1 seed Houston in the Sweet 16 and No. 1 Alabama falling to No. 5 San Diego State, all No. 1 seeds were officially eliminated from the Big Dance.
This year’s tournament will mark the first time that a No. 1 seed will not play in the Elite Eight in tournament history.

Dallas Mavericks guard Luka Doncic is going to have to pay up some real money after rubbing his fingers together at a referee.
Y’know, like the universal sign for money.
It happened with less than 2 seconds to play in the Dallas Mavericks’ 127-125 loss to the Golden State Warriors. The Slovenian superstar was frustrated about what he deemed to be a couple of missed calls and decided to let one of the refs know it.

The final two top seeds fell Friday, and the Big Dance descended into chaos of unprecedented proportions.
An upset-filled Friday night in the men’s NCAA tournament has set the stage for a wide-open race for the national championship.
No. 1 overall seed Alabama and championship betting favorite Houston were both shockingly bounced from the Big Dance on Friday. For the first time in tournament history, all four No. 1 seeds have been eliminated before the Elite Eight: Purdue in the first round, Kansas in the second, and now the Crimson Tide and Cougars in the Sweet 16.

Is there any better occasion to bust out some dance moves if you’re 73 years old than eliminating a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament?
There’s not, and that’s exactly what Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga did on Friday night after bouncing the Houston Cougars.

Far be it from me to critique someone else’s dancing. It was unorthodox, but dammit, it got the boys going and that’s all that matters.
He’s no stranger to dancing after a big win.

The Gonzaga star had quite the moniker during his first year with the Bulldogs.
The jokes about Drew Timme’s mustache or the length of time he played for Gonzaga never get old.
However, as the senior forward continues his final run with the Bulldogs—who will face UConn in an Elite Eight matchup in the West Region on Saturday—Gonzaga coach Mark Few took a moment to reflect on his players’ nicknames over the years in Friday’s news conference ahead of the big game.

The Hurricanes and their longtime coach had plenty to celebrate on Friday.
With a stunning 89–75 upset over No. 1 Houston on Friday, No. 5 Miami is now locked in as one of the eight teams who will keep dancing in the men’s NCAA tournament this weekend. And, apparently, the upset win inspired coach Jim Larrañaga to get in on the theme.
Following the Hurricanes’ historic Sweet 16 win, CBS cameras caught a classic moment in the Miami locker room showing Larrañaga breaking out some hilarious dance moves as his players cheered him on.
