A Babe Ruth jersey sold at Heritage Auctions on Sunday for $24.12 million — officially making it the most expensive sports collectible ever.
“The Bambino” was wearing the jersey in Game 3 of the 1932 World Series against the Chicago Cubs when he called his shot before hitting a home run over the center field wall at Wrigley Field.
But did he really call his shot? That’s been the subject of fierce debate for almost 100 years now.
In the fifth inning of the tied ballgame, Ruth made a pointing gesture while at bat. Some say he was indicating the count.

Former World No. 1 Lydia Ko won the AIG Women’s Open at St. Andrews, winning her first major title since 2016.
What a summer it has been for Lydia Ko.
Two weeks after winning the gold medal at the Olympics in Paris, Ko conquered the Old Course at St. Andrews, winning the AIG Women’s Open for the first time. In doing so, she became the first player from New Zealand to win this championship.

A high school football game in California got shut down because one team took the meaning of the word “beatdown” a little too literally.
Central high school (CHS) played Justin Garza high school (JGHS) in a matchup last week, and was winning by a score of 40-0. That, by every metric, is a thorough beating, and JGHS’ frustration with the score boiled over in the third quarter.

Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese is a double-double machine who continues to pile up rebounds at an incredible rate.
Despite her success near the basket, Reese struggles mightily to actually put the ball through the net.
On Sunday, the Sky faced the Las Vegas Aces, the defending WNBA champions. Reese did what she does practically every game: grab a ton of rebounds and miss a ton of shots.
But she did just enough to earn her 22nd double-double of the season, tying Tina Charles for the WNBA rookie record.

Can Ferrari build off Charles Leclerc’s ‘good surprise’ at the Dutch Grand Prix?
Following his emotional win at the Monaco Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc and Ferrari were tantalizingly close to Red Bull atop the Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship standings, just 24 points behind.
Since then, however, Ferrari has been on the back foot. Between Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr., the team managed just a pair of podiums before the summer shutdown, and they limped into the break having slid down to third in the standings.

An entity affiliated with NASCAR Cup Series team Hendrick Motorsports is suing Hooters for $1.7 million — plus interest — over alleged unpaid sponsorship fees.
According to court records obtained by The Charlotte Ledger, HMS Holdings LLC filed its complaint on July 30, suing the restaurant chain for breach of contract and unjust enrichment.
This lawsuit comes just weeks after Hendrick terminated its agreement with Hooters to sponsor driver Chase Elliott. Hooters had sponsored Elliott on a part-time basis since 2017, including serving as the primary sponsor on his No. 9 car in 24 races.
