It was an emotional scene on Tuesday night when the Columbus Blue Jackets hit the ice for their home opener against the Florida Panthers for a night meant to celebrate the life and career of star player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew.
The two brothers were struck and killed by a drunk driver over the summer, and while the Blue Jackets have played at home since Gaudreau’s death, this was their first regular-season contest on home ice since his passing.
However, he was, of course, there in spirit and his No. 13 was certainly present too.

A tug-of-war for the Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback job is commencing as offseason acquisition Russell Wilson returns after dealing with a strained calf injury through the season’s first six weeks.
Justin Fields, who’s been good enough to manage Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record, is tied with Wilson for the starting role, at least by head coach Mike Tomlin’s estimation this week.

Ahead of this week’s Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas, defending champion Tom Kim commended the PGA Tour’s current structure.
Maybe it’s because he has won the Shriners Children’s Open two years in a row. Or perhaps it’s because Tom Kim is only 22 years old—a man whose energy is comparable to the Energizer Bunny, as he seems to play almost every week.

New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart shared her distress over a recent hate message, including a death threat, received by her and her spouse, Marta Xargay Casademont.
An email received by the family allegedly read: “I hope someone shoots your wife dead.” More threats were sent to Stewart, suggesting violence against the family.
The heckler, who has a history of online harassment, according to the New York Post, reportedly threatened Stewart’s family, which includes the couple’s two kids.

Just over one year ago, I wrote an article for this fine website about the sport of conkers.
It involves competitors trying to smash other players’ chestnuts threaded onto strings with their own and it’s popular in the United Kingdom (see what can happen when there’s no Division I college football in your country?).
Last year’s concern was that the nuts were too soggy, and I thought that would be the last time I ever wrote about conkers, though that was largely because I used my best nut jokes.

It’s not exactly rocket science, but it turns out that baseball fans and casual observers really like big-market postseason matchups. That’s exactly what Major League Baseball lucked into with the National League Championship Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets.
Over the last few years, MLB’s chase for more television revenue has created mostly disappointing national postseason series.
