Former Oregon star Wilma Nielsen wasn’t sure she was going to be able to keep pace with Lucia Stafford when she soared out in front of the women’s 1,500 meters July 3 at the Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field.
Stafford at one point led the race by almost 20 meters, pushed ahead by a brisk pace set by Maddy Mooney.
But with a lap to go, Nielsen stuck with Stanford star Juliette Whittaker and both cruised past Stafford over the final 100 meters, with Nielsen surging across the finish line in front of her home crowd for the first time in a pro uniform.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Kyle Stowers hit two home runs in a 4-for-5 night, Heriberto Hernández, Jakob Marsee and Owen Caissie also homered and the Miami Marlins beat the Athletics 12-5 on Friday night.
Stowers had his second four-hit game of the season, matching a June 17 performance against the Phillies.
Hernández’s 414-foot three-run shot in the first inning made it a five-run game before the first out was recorded, as the first five batters all came around to score.
Liam Hicks scored on Xavier Edwards’ bases-loaded walk, and Stowers came across on a passed ball.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — It’s not the start to the holiday weekend that the Angels wanted. 
Left-hander Reid Detmers got tagged for five earned runs, the offense was non-existent until the eighth inning and Logan O’Hoppe left the game after a foul ball hit him in the mask, and he is now under concussion protocol in the Angels’ 5-2* loss against the Red Sox on Friday night.

No one could’ve predicted Argentina would nearly be bounced from the World Cup by Cape Verde, but the round of 32 gave us an instant classic.

Cape Verde’s performances will surely go down as perhaps the most charming story of this World Cup.
The protagonist of this fairytale is undoubtedly Vozinha. The 40-year-old keeper, who now stands at 20 million Instagram followers, played a simply outstanding tournament.
Argentina had to find that out last night as well. Vozinha repeatedly drove the Albiceleste superstars to despair and made sure the defending champions really had to suffer in their 3–2 extra-time victory.

Applause erupted, drums began to beat and car horns honked: Cape Verde’s narrow loss to Argentina was cause for celebration early Saturday in Praia as the Blue Sharks’ World Cup dream run came to a sad but brilliant end.
The African archipelago of just over 500,000 people progressed to the knockout stages in their first ever World Cup after drawing with European champions Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in the group stage.
