New Mexico City Votes to Protect Babies From Abortions

A second New Mexico city just voted to protect unborn babies from abortion.

KRQE reports the Clovis City Commissioners voted 7-0 with one abstention Thursday to pass a pro-life ordinance, joining the City of Hobbs in standing up to their state’s pro-abortion laws.

After the vote, lawyer Mike Seibel with the pro-life organization Abortion on Trial, which is based in New Mexico, celebrated the victory.

“Thanks to the great people of Clovis and all the prayer warriors,” Seibel said. “Banning abortion in the most pro-abortion state in the country shows all things are possible with God.”

Mayor Mike Morris moved the ordinance to a vote Thursday after several months of delays, according to the local news. In October, Morris expressed support for the measure, saying local residents are concerned about abortion facilities moving there from Texas. Clovis is located near the state border.

“Obviously, being legal in the state of New Mexico, but having been banned in Texas, the concerns on the part of the public here are that Clovis could potentially become this abortion destination,” the mayor said at the time. “And folks in Clovis are and by large pro-life. So that concerns them at a very high, high level.”

The ordinance is similar to one that the City of Hobbs passed in November. It requires abortionists to follow a federal law that prohibits the sending of abortion drugs and devices through the mail.

Mark Lee Dickson, director with Right to Life of East Texas and founder of the Sanctuary City for the Unborn movement, helped local residents advocate for the life-saving measure.

Dickson said the New Mexico ordinances are different from the Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinances in other states. Although they do not ban abortions, they still reach “the same result – the protection of the life of unborn children and their mothers in the City of Clovis,” he said.

When Texas began protecting unborn babies through its historic heartbeat law last year, the abortion industry turned its sights to New Mexico border towns. New Mexico allows abortions for any reason without restriction – making it easy for abortion facilities to do a lucrative business killing babies in the womb.

Hobbs residents recently learned that a Texas-based abortion chain was considering their town as a location for one of its new abortion facilities, but the city council’s action stopped that from happening. Instead, according to Abortion on Trial, the abortion chain decided to purchase a property on Lomas Boulevard in Albuquerque under the name “Stirrups.”

Other cities across the country also are considering ordinances to protect unborn babies from abortion this winter.

A growing grassroots effort, 63 cities in Texas, Ohio, Nebraska and New Mexico have passed Sanctuary City for the Unborn ordinances that protect unborn babies by banning or restricting abortions and/or abortion facilities within city limits. Additionally, one county, Lea County in New Mexico, passed an ordinance similar to those in Hobbs and Clovis in December.

Other cities and counties have passed pro-life resolutions, which are statements of support but not enforceable law, that recognize unborn babies’ right to life. In Arkansas, 19 counties and 10 cities and towns have passed pro-life resolutions, according to Family Council of Arkansas. Several North Carolina counties passed pro-life resolutions recently, too, and the New Mexico county commissioners of Otero approved a resolution in July condemning the pro-abortion laws in their state.
