Former Toronto Maple Leafs winger and current NHL analyst Jay Rosehill drew criticism from fans Thursday night after commenting on Mitch Marner‘s performance following the Vegas Golden Knights‘ 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final.
Shortly after the defeat, Rosehill posted on X, saying, “Anyone notice Marner tonight? Was it a game 5-7 or something?”
The remark immediately led to debate online, with many fans viewing it as an unfair reference to Marner’s playoff struggles during his years in Toronto.

MONTMELO, Spain (AP) — Alpine driver Pierre Gasly’s third-place finish at the Monaco Grand Prix was reinstated Friday after racing officials accepted an appeal filed by the Formula 1 team.

Bradley Barcola over Désiré Doué on France’s left?
There are few uncertainties in this France side heading into their FIFA World Cup opener against Senegal, but one does exist on the left-hand side.
It is a role that Marcus Thuram has often played, including during the Euro 2024 campaign. Despite rarely impressing in the role, he nonetheless started there in the warm-up game against the Ivory Coast last week.

ESPN | Enrique Rojas: The Red Sox sit in last place in the division, and even though the last Wild Card slot is currently held by the .500 Texas Rangers, there isn’t much faith in Fenway making a push to contend this year.
Gone are the days when World Cup games were littered with red cards. Or so we thought.
Three reds were shown in the opener on Thursday as Mexico beat South Africa 2-0.
South Africa’s Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off, and then Mexico’s Cesar Montes was dismissed in stoppage time.
Maybe we had been spoiled. The World Cups in Russia and Qatar each had just four red cards. The 2026 tournament has nearly matched that already.
It had been 20 years since three players were sent off in one match, in the 2006 finals when 28 players saw red overall.
[BBC]
Players receiving a red card in the 2026 World Cup will receive a one-match suspension.
This applies to both straight red cards and red cards that are the result of the same player being cautioned twice.
Fifa does hold the right to impose “further sanctions” if it deems it necessary.
During the opening game of the tournament, three red cards were shown.
It means that South Africa’s Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane will miss their side’s match against the Czech Republic, while Mexico defender Cesar Montes will miss their meeting with South Korea.

Mexico’s 2-0 win over South Africa turned the World Cup opener into a rules lesson after three straight red cards at Estadio Azteca.

After a year, Roma could be back with a strong interest in Lucumì.

Ireland are preparing for their fifth T20 World Cup, but one thing has eluded them in their four previous appearances in the tournament – a win.
They have exited in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2023 as the bottom side in their group and have lost all 17 games they have played in those four editions of the competition.

The Toronto Raptors had an impressive season, though it’s still fair to mention that they’re a bit away from where the New York Knicks have played throughout the past month and a half.
The same can seemingly be said for most teams in the NBA, but Toronto will have to ensure it improves and does so in both the immediate and long-term future.

CBF’s US Strategy: How Brazil’s League Reform Connects to MLS
CBF held an inaugural meeting with representatives of clubs from the Brazilian Serie A and B championships and the State Federations to begin the debate on the creation of a Football League in Brazil, with CBF president Samir Xaud calling it “a historic day for Brazilian football” as clubs came together “to discuss an issue that will define our future: the creation of a single league.
How MLS Plans to Leverage 2026 World Cup for Long-Term Growth
Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber says the league is treating the 2026 FIFA World Cup not as a six-week showcase, but as the launchpad for a new era, aiming to convert global attention on North American soccer into lasting growth in fans, relevance and stature. This strategic approach represents a fundamental shift from viewing the World Cup as a temporary boost to positioning it as a catalyst for structural transformation.
Slavko Vincic to Referee Brazil vs Morocco After 2020 Police Detention
FIFA appointed Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic to officiate Brazil’s World Cup opener against Morocco on Saturday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The 46-year-old brings elite experience but also controversy from a 2020 police detention in Bosnia.
Vincic, part of FIFA and UEFA’s elite referee group, has officiated major Champions League and Europa League matches. His appointment for the Group C clash reinforces FIFA’s confidence in his abilities for high-profile games involving traditional powerhouses.
Mexico made an immediate impression in a drama-filled opening match of the 2026 World Cup, winning 2-0 against South Africa in a game that produced three red cards.
The Mexicans rebounded from the massive disappointment of being eliminated after the group stage four years ago in Qatar. That followed seven straight trips to the round of 16 — an achievement that became more of a curse for failing to reach the quarterfinals.
But there is hope this year. Mexico has reached the quarterfinals twice in its history, and both times it was the host country — in 1970 and 1986.
⚽ Mexico top of Group A! How it stands after World Cup day one
After an exciting opening matchday of the 2026 World Cup, Mexico has taken the lead in the group.
Thanks to their emphatic opening win over South Africa, Javier Aguirre’s side sits top with 3 points and a goal difference of +2. Korea also picked up 3 points, moving into second place in the standings with a goal difference of +1.
The head-to-head clash between Mexico and South Korea (next matchday) will put a mathematical spot in the next round and the definitive top spot in the group on the line.

Andrei Svechnikov scored twice and Sebastian Aho added a second-period goal in a breakout game for Carolina’s top-line performers, helping the Hurricanes beat Vegas 4-2 to move to within a victory of winning the Stanley Cup.
The Commissioner’s Cup has been a past indicator of the New York Liberty’s future.
In 2023, they beat the Las Vegas Aces in the Cup final before losing to them in the WNBA championship series. The following year, they lost to the Minnesota Lynx in the Commissioner’s Cup championship game but won their first WNBA title that fall, beating the Lynx in a five-game series.
Thursday’s 104-90 win over the Atlanta Dream might be just another game. Or, with a commanding lead in the Commissioner’s Cup Eastern Conference standings, it might be the earliest indication of what’s to come.
One of the most uncertain groups of the 2026 World Cup was Group A, with Mexico, South Korea and Czechia all legitimate contenders to reach the knockout rounds. South Korea took a major step toward making that happen in its opener on Thursday.
Playing in front of a friendly crowd in Guadalajara, South Korea defeated Czechia 2-1 in a comeback win.
Neither team mounted much of an attack in the first half, but Czechia broke through in the 59th minute on a perfect set piece. The 6-foot-3 Ladislav Krejcí connected on a header off a throw-in to open the scoring.

Adam Schefter has claimed the Chicago Bears’ proposed move to Hammond, Indiana is no bluff, describing the stadium push as close to a done deal.
The Bears’ stadium saga has dragged through Chicago, Arlington Heights, and now Northwest Indiana, but this latest turn feels different.
That is why Schefter’s wording matters. This was not framed as simple leverage against Illinois, but as a real step toward moving one of the NFL’s most historic teams across state lines.
Norway continues to win the World Cup.
Erling Haaland and his Norwegian teammates were at Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final on Thursday, June 11. The players were sitting in a box, waving rally towels and having a grand old time. Man City’s star forward even found a Carolina Hurricanes jersey during the game, ditching the polo he wore to the game for it.
The Hurricanes play in Raleigh, less than 90 minutes from where Norway is training in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Hurricanes beat the Vegas Golden Knights to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.
