CORVALLIS — Two years ago, Jarrel Comer was a freshman at Tallahassee Community College and had not played competitive football since middle school. Now he’s a starting outside linebacker at Oregon State.

Comer played basketball at Eastside High School in Gainesville, Florida, but began college as a regular student. He looked for opportunities to play sports again and football became the opportunity at Citrus College in California.

He boarded a plane for the first time to take a cross-country flight to play football for the first time in more than four years.

The Alabama Crimson Tide have officially earned a spot inside the top five of the first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2026 season. Despite already suffering two losses, the selection committee placed Alabama at No. 5, giving Kalen DeBoer’s team an early opportunity to compete for a national championship.
At 6-2 overall and 4-2 in SEC play, Alabama has experienced an interesting season. The Crimson Tide started strong but suffered consecutive losses against Georgia and Tennessee, raising questions about their consistency and championship expectations.

Caleb Williams is still feeling it. Williams and the Chicago Bears took the reigning Super Bowl champions Seattle Seahawks to the woodshed in a Monday Night Football meeting in Week 8, taking down Sam Darnold and company in a 34-17 victory at Lumen Field in Seattle to improve to 6-2.

That’s the motto the Winner football team chants each time it breaks the huddle to take the field on defense.
It serves both as a challenge and a promise. Wherever the ball goes, 11 Warriors will be in pursuit, trying to make a stop.
An example of that mentality showed up in the biggest moment of Winner’s season to date. With under three minutes to play in last week’s quarterfinals, a Deuel receiver got open behind the defense, but the Warriors didn’t give up on the play.

Tickets for the Nov. 7 Ohio State-Oregon game have decreased since the start of the season for what was once a matchup between national championship favorites.
The Buckeyes lost their latest matchup against USC and fell to a 6-2 record. Oregon is 5-3 with losses to Oklahoma State, UCLA and Illinois.
Both teams also are without their original starting quarterbacks. Ducks quarterback Dante Moore is out for the season after sustaining a concussion against USC in September.

The City of Los Angeles has an expectation for championships from its sports teams. 
The Los Angeles Lakers are off to a strong start to the NBA season and the Los Angeles Rams entered the NFL season as Super Bowl favorites.
While the Rams have experienced struggles, there’s still an expectation that they can turn the season around if the team can get some of its stars back at full health.
The Rams’ and Lakers’ respective counterparts have not looked as promising.
The Los Angeles Clippers and Los Angeles Chargers have a combined record of 1-13.

Nov. 3—PARKSTON, S.D. — Stability at quarterback can be one of the most important pieces of a successful football program, especially when a team has established a winning standard.
For Parkston, that steady hand has come from senior quarterback Brycen Bruening, who has helped keep the Trojans’ offense rolling while continuing a tradition of success that began before he became the team’s full-time starter.

The Bills have released safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, the team announced Tuesday.

Major League Baseball has proposed delaying the implementation of a salary cap until 2028 while it puts into place other elements of its labor offer for 2027.

The initial College Football Playoff rankings have arrived.
And the selection committee has set the stage for a massive weekend ahead.
The committee’s initial set of rankings have set the table for four games between teams ranked inside the Top 15. Miami, the No. 1 team in the first rankings released moments ago, heads to South Bend to take on Notre Dame, ranked at No. 11 by the committee.
In addition, No. 7 BYU heads to Salt Lake City to take on No. 3 Utah in a massive game for both the Big 12, and the College Football Playoff.

ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands (AP) — The Champions League game between Feyenoord and Inter Milan was interrupted on Tuesday after home fans, disappointed with their side losing, fired flares that landed on the pitch and on the roof of the De Kuip Stadium.
Inter, like Feyenoord on three points ahead of the game, went ahead early with a first European goal for defender Yann Bisseck.
Italy’s 21-year-old forward Pio Esposito headed the second goal later in the first half and Piotr Zieliński made the final score 3-0 with a long-range strike after 54 minutes.

Multiple landscape-shifting trends have already materialized. The Chicago Bears’ trade of two first-round draft picks for defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons is the richest and perhaps highest-ceiling move. The New York Giants’ fifth-round pick for now-starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy may net the best value.

Rachel Apa, a 24-year-old runner in the New York City Marathon, died Sunday night after collapsing in Central Park about two miles from the finish line, according to her family.
Her father, Stephen Apa, said he had been texting his daughter during the race and that she appeared to be doing well earlier on the course.
“After her nine miles, she said she was doing great. I told her, ‘ Don’t overdo it. It’s your first marathon,” he said.
Stephen Apa spoke by phone from the family’s home in Lewiston, Pennsylvania.

Five-time winners Barcelona took an early lead through Lamine Yamal before Raphinha continued his fine goalscoring form with a second-half brace.
Barca bounced back after defeat by champions Paris Saint-Germain in their previous European outing to stay in the hunt for a top eight league phase berth.

Ohio State‘s Austin Siereveld said that keeping the snap count simple with new starting quarterback Luke Fahey will fix the football team’s communication issues on the offensive line.
“We were in between with cadences and on the silent, so we’ve just got to focus on one, and [there was] just a lot of stuff going on in the huddle,” Siereveld told reporters Nov. 3.
During Ohio State’s 30-12 loss to USC, the Buckeyes were called for 11 penalties, a team high this season. Three of those penalties were false starts.

The San Francisco 49ers are reuniting with a former draft pick on the defensive line.
According to an announcement from the team, defensive end Robert Beal Jr. is joining the 49ers’ practice squad after being waived by the Miami Dolphins on Friday.
Beal was a fifth-round pick of the 49ers in the 2023 draft and he never quite found his footing with the club despite getting a handful of opportunities. The University of Georgia product played in 25 games across three seasons in San Francisco. He logged 1.0 sacks to go along with 36 tackles and one tackle for loss.

The Baltimore Ravens received some encouraging injury news Tuesday as several key players returned to full participation ahead of Thursday Night Football against the Jacksonville Jaguars at M&T Bank Stadium.
Offensive linemen Vega Ioane and Ronnie Stanley, linebacker Roquan Smith, outside linebacker Trey Hendrickson, and running back Justice Hill were all upgraded from limited to full participation on Baltimore’s latest Week 9 injury report. The improvements provide some much-needed optimism for a Ravens team dealing with significant injuries during a short week.

Bodo/Glimt and Lille played out a goalless draw in the Champions League as both sides struggled to create chances in a lacklustre encounter in Norway.
An uneventful first half produced just three shots, with only one on target, all of which came from the visitors.
Both sides were content to absorb pressure and remain patient in possession, but neither looked particularly threatening in attack.
