MELBOURNE, April 21 (Reuters) – With doctors, physios, psychologists, analysts and strength and conditioning coaches, Australian Football League (AFL) clubs are as equipped as any of the world’s top sporting franchises to support their players with a high quality of care.
Yet an on-field “mental health episode” suffered by Carlton midfielder Elijah Hollands has exposed the limits of these support structures in the full glare of the public spotlight.
CJ McCollum scored 32 points, and the Hawks rallied to stun the Knicks 107-106 on Monday night, tying their first-round playoff series at one game apiece.

Callum Doyle had loan spells at Sunderland, Coventry, Leicester and Norwich before joining Wrexham [Getty Images]
Defender Callum Doyle has been a key member of the Wrexham team bidding for the Championship play-offs.
The 22-year-old has played in 36 games in all competitions this season, including 26 successive matches.
His performances have been recognised with a spot in the Championship team of the season, one he describes as a “massive honour”.
But Doyle acknowledges that life at the Stok Cae Ras did not get off to the best of starts.
Why Roma’s Home Support Remains One of the Biggest Advantages in Serie A
Modern football is often explained through numbers. Possession percentages, expected goals, wage bills, and transfer fees dominate most conversations. Those things matter, but they never tell the whole story. Some advantages still cannot be fully measured, and one of the biggest is the relationship between a team and its supporters.
That is where AS Roma continue to stand out.
Anyone who has followed a major match in the Italian capital knows that the atmosphere around Roma is different.

The Orioles were desperate, perhaps as much as they’ve been all season.
Amid a trying road trip that had already seen them narrowly avoid a no-hitter and drop three of four against their first-year manager’s former team, the Orioles entered the ninth inning Monday in a collective 0-for-22 skid at the plate. Their star shortstop Gunnar Henderson then led off that inning by drawing a walk and getting thrown out as he took his lead at first base, the second time on the night the Kansas City Royals picked him off.
Frustration was evident in that third-base dugout.

A Tuesday night tripleheader of NBA playoff games on NBC and Peacock wraps up with the Los Angeles Lakers playing host to the Houston Rockets in Game 2 of their first-round series.
The Lakers won 107-98 in Game 1 despite the absence of injured scorers Luka Doncic (hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique) as four-time NBA MVP LeBron James had 19 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds. The Rockets are playing without injured leading scorer Kevin Durant (knee).
Well, the Hawks are headed back to Atlanta with an even series after all.
The Hawks rallied out of a double-digit hole in the fourth quarter and absolutely shut down the New York Knicks in the final period to grab a 107-106 win in Game 2 of their opening-round playoff series. That tied the series up 1-1 as it shifts to Atlanta later this week.
The Hawks, despite entering the final period down by 12, opened the fourth quarter on a 20-9 tear and cut the game back to just a single point after a Jalen Johnson layup that forced a Knicks timeout.
Mohamed to Jardine: at this club, everything is quickly forgotten
Antonio Mohamed and André Jardine are making headlines again after the intense América vs. Toluca match at Estadio Banorte, this due to the words the scarlet coach directed at the América manager before the clash.
In a video circulating on social media, “El Turco” can be seen hugging Jardine and saying: “Stay calm. At this club, when things are going badly, they turn on you. They quickly forget everything,” referring to the Eagles’ current situation.

One of the NBA’s most notable playoff rivalries in recent history is back in action this year, with the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks locked in to face off in the first round of the playoffs.
Despite Trae Young’s departure from Atlanta this season, Knicks fans still have a sour taste in their mouths from the 2021 Playoffs. Despite being the No.

The Cleveland Cavaliers protected home court, as expected, as they walked away from Game 2 of their first-round matchup against the Toronto Raptors victorious and in great position to close out this series sooner rather than later.
Despite just modest bench production — 19 points to Toronto’s 45 — Cleveland’s starting lineup and potent offensive system was simply too much for the Raptors.
Let’s get into some takeaways.
University of Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy missed all of last season with a torn ACL in his right knee. He could miss “extensive” time in 2026 as a rookie in the NFL.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that team medical staffs are concerned McCoy could need another surgery to repair a bone plug in McCoy’s knee. The bone plug was used to repair a cartilage defect.
McCoy is rated as one of the top cornerback prospects and a likely first-round pick.
He could fall, though, as Will Johnson did last year over concerns about his knee.

New PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp is watching the rumors and speculation surrounding LIV Golf like the rest of the golf world.
While the Tour will consider new avenues for players to return from the Saudi Arabian-backed circuit, a topic that has been circulating again in recent days after reports that LIV Golf was about to have its funding pulled and shut down, Rolapp doesn’t seem to be in a rush to get anything done on that front.
“We’re all reading the same headlines you’re reading. We don’t know what’s going on over there,” Rolapp said on ESPN on Monday.
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — A mechanical issue with their charter plane forced the Toronto Blue Jays to bus from Phoenix to Southern California on Sunday night, a six-hour drive on a dark desert highway that got the team to its Orange County hotel at around 12:30 a.m.
“I felt like I was back in the Northwest League,” manager John Schneider said before Monday night’s series opener against the Los Angeles Angels. “But we made the best of it, we all got here safe, and we’re ready to go.
Kentucky forward Mouhamed Dioubate has committed to LSU out of the NCAA transfer portal, On3 has learned. Dioubate spent the last year with the Wildcats.
Previously, he had suited up for Alabama for two seasons before transferring within the SEC. He had his most productive season to date at Kentucky.
Mouhamed Dioubate logged 10 starts in 31 appearances. He averaged a career-high 8.8 points, while also chipping in 5.5 rebounds per game. He also perfectly averaged an assist, a block and a steal per game.

Victor Wembanyama, 22, is both the youngest DPOY winner in NBA history and the first to win the award unanimously.
DENVER (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers closer Edwin Díaz will undergo surgery to remove loose bodies from his elbow and is expected to miss about three months, the team announced Monday.
The procedure will be performed Wednesday at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles, and Díaz is not expected back until the second half of the season.
The Dodgers placed the 32-year-old right-hander on the 15-day injured list and recalled left-hander Jake Elder from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Mumbai Indians’ emphatic 99-run win over Gujarat Titans was defined by Tilak Varma’s brilliance, but skipper Hardik Pandya made it clear that a key tactical call with the ball also played a decisive role.
One of the biggest talking points was the decision to hand the new ball to Jasprit Bumrah, a move that paid off instantly as he struck with the very first delivery to remove Sai Sudharsan. It was also a significant moment for Bumrah personally, as this was his first wicket of the season, coming in his sixth match.
“The real struggle might have been getting to 65 games, but I’m super, super happy to win this award, and actually super proud to be the first ever unanimous,” Wembanyama said on Monday night the the NBA on NBC crew.

“I’ve had the chance to have great coaches over my career that have taught me great habits on defense and my shot blocking, especially since we’re talking about it, is something I’ve been working on forever,” Wembanyama said Monday night. “It’s probably the area in the game where I feel most comfortable.
Ramona Shelburne: Two years ago I was debating voting for Wemby for DPOY and asked an accomplished veteran player for his opinion. I’ll never forget what he said. This was the last year anyone else had a chance, the player said. Once he wins DPOY, he will win every year. In the end they’ll want to name it after him.

In hindsight, Denny Hamlin wishes he would not have let Kyle Larson force him three-wide middle on the final restart on Sunday at Kansas Speedway. Of course, if he could do it all over again, he also would likely have restarted on the outside as well.
That was the overall sentiment from Hamlin on Monday during the latest episode of his Actions Detrimental podcast, one in which he feels everything went against him in a race that looked like his to lose.
SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Mariners third baseman Brendan Donovan was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Saturday with a left groin muscle strain.
Donovan exited Friday’s 5-0 loss to the Texas Rangers with a left hip issue. He has also been dealing with right groin discomfort for two weeks and suggested it might be related to an Oct. 7 sports hernia surgery.
“It’s something that you have to closely monitor and keep watching on,” manager Dan Wilson said Saturday.
