The final set of World Cup group stage games is here already, which means some teams have everything to play for, some have nothing to play for and many have something in between.
Team motivations aren’t always clear. How much do they actually care about a specific Round-of-32 matchup or path to the quarterfinals? How important is resting players? What about protecting them from a potential yellow-card suspension?
These questions are somewhat murky, so I tend to stick with games and teams that have clearer reasons to go for it (or not).

Stefon Diggs, who once provided the Vikings with the Minneapolis Miracle, remains unsigned with just over a month to go before training camp. Although he is 31, Diggs is coming off an 85-catch, 1,013-yard, four-TD season with the New England Patriots and can still provide good value to an offense.
ESPN’s Aaron Schatz projects Diggs to head to the AFC West and sign with the Las Vegas Raiders, who may be starting Kirk Cousins to begin the 2026 season. Diggs and Cousins were teammates in Minnesota from 2018-19.

Martin Dubravka became Tottenham’s fourth signing of a busy off-season on Wednesday in a move that is expected to open the door for Guglielmo Vicario to leave the club.
Experienced former Newcastle and Manchester United stopper Dubravka will join on a free transfer after he left Burnley at the end of last campaign.

Dates and times confirmed for first round fixtures of 2026-27 DFB-Pokal
The Deutscher Fußball-Bund (German Football Association) has officially confirmed the date and time of 32 games in Round 1 of the DFB Pokal for the 2026-27 season.
Of the fixtures, 30 will be played between Friday 21 and Monday 24 August 2026. The remaining two fixtures involving Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund will take place on Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 September 2026.

Last week, I said there were two developments that could bring the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini story back to the front burner. As it turns out, there was another way it could have been dusted off.
Beyond The Athletic announcing the outcome of its internal investigation of Russini (number one) and Russini going public with her side of the story (number two), a third path for resurrecting the issue was looming — a lengthy New York Times article regarding the ordeal.
It’s a significant article, for several reasons. First, it contains several new revelations.

New Orleans Saints rookie wide receiver Bryce Lance received an opportunity to take on a big role during minicamp. It’s safe to say that the fourth-round rookie made the most of it with Chris Olave and first-round pick Jordyn Tyson limited due to injuries — which is why ESPN’s Katherine Terrell highlighted Lance as the Saints’ biggest surprise during team activities this spring.
“The fourth-round pick got his time to shine during minicamp with Chris Olave and Jordyn Tyson limited and a number of other wideouts hurt,” Terrell wrote.

The host for the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics — the next Games yet to be awarded — will be chosen in mid-2029 with the IOC returning to choosing a Summer Games host seven years out.
In mid-2029, the IOC Executive Board will select “preferred hosts” for 2036 to go up for election at an IOC session.
The next two Summer Games will be in Los Angeles in 2028 and Brisbane, Australia, in 2032.
LA received the 2028 Games in 2017 — when Paris was also named the 2024 host. Brisbane was named 2032 host in 2021.
