As Ian Eagle prepares for the men’s NCAA Tournament and his run through calling the Final Four, he’s been finding himself going through old text messages with Greg Gumbel.
Eagle had known Gumbel since he arrived at CBS in 1998 and remembered how humble and approachable he was from the moment they met. Eagle gets a laugh out of the messages, remembering how kind of person Gumbel was, but reading them also made him emotional.
There’s certainly been an empty presence during the coverage of 2025 March Madness, the first tournament since Gumbel’s death.

Wisconsin transfer guard A.J. Storr and the No. 7-seed Kansas Jayhawks fell 79-72 to the No. 7-seed Arkansas Razorbacks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday evening.
In one of the more thrilling contests of the round of 64, the Jayhawks nearly completed an 11-point second-half comeback against John Calipari’s group. Kansas led by as many as three points in the final six minutes of action before the Razorbacks piloted a 7-0 scoring run to establish an edge for the remainder of the contest.
Storr did provide Kansas a valuable boost off the bench throughout the contest.

The New York Giants have until May 1 to decide on Kayvon Thibodeaux’s fifth-year option and early expectations are that they exercise it.
If they don’t, Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus believes Thibodeaux is the team’s best trade asset and should be dealt at some point in 2025.
The Giants are in a strange place from a roster construction standpoint in that they either have untouchable young players or players who seemingly wouldn’t attract much interest. The one player who might fit into an alternate category is Thibodeaux.
The New Orleans Saints have had a long offseason process so far, between hiring an all-new coaching staff, clearing up cap space to utilize for new players, and then setting up a long list of pre-draft meetings in recent weeks to speak with prospects and see who they mesh well with. Their group of meetings has grown even longer in the past few days as reports continue to come out regarding who they have spoken with to this point.
The New Orleans Saints have quite a long list of prospects that they have met with during the offseason process, and that list continues to grow as more reports come out and more players meet with them in recent days. Last month the HBCU combine was held at the Saints’ Ochsner Sports Performance Center, and at that event, the team met with Jackson State defensive back Robert McDaniel, which Justin Melo of The Draft Network reported in an interview with the young defender.
“I met with more than 16 teams,” McDaniel told Melo.

Adam Peters is not omniscient, but he does know what he is doing.
No, the Commanders still haven’t signed that edge pass rusher they really want to sign.
Yes, two veteran edge rushers were available last weekend, and it seemed Peters would certainly sign one of them. But what was harder to swallow was that not only did Peters not get either one of them, but the Eagles signed both Azeez Ojulari and Joshua Uche.
Ojulari is only 24 and tall at 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds, while Uche is only 26 and 6-foot-1 and 240 pounds. It was frustrating to see the Eagles target and get both over Peters.
Florida basketball opens up its NCAA Tournament run on Friday evening in Raleigh, North Carolina, against the Norfolk State Spartans in the first round of this year’s March Madness. The Gators are the No. 1 seed in the West Region while the Spartans are a No. 16-seeded automatic qualifier from the MEAC.
The two teams have met once before — in the Big Dance, no less — back in 2012 when a seventh-seeded UF squad headed by Billy Donovan crushed No. 15-seed Norfolk State, 84-50, in the Sweet 16.
