If the Rangers signaled their deadline strategy on Saturday with the acquisition of Max Scherzer, they reiterated it on Sunday, underscoring the point with yet another splashy deal. The message should be obvious: The Rangers are here to win. They feel this is their moment, and if their window of contention looked anything less than wide-open before, they’ve just pushed it open even wider.
The Rangers made a deal with the Cardinals on Sunday for some additional pitching.

Hit and run.
A fight broke out at Browns training camp Sunday after defensive end Ogbo Okoronkwo assumed he could get away with a slap on offensive tackle James Hudson III.
The final practice session held in West Virginia put the Browns players in pressure cooker temperatures.
Ogbo hit a boiling point after coming off the edge and getting thrown to the ground by Hudson. The DE slapped Hudson and promptly started to run away. Hudson returned the favor once he caught up to Okoronkwo with a punch to the helmet.
The teammates started scrapping, and others jumped in to separate the two.

Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill and cornerback Eli Apple—sworn enemies mere months ago—presumably did not count on being teammates this season.
However, Apple—a free agent since March—saw his fortunes reverse when Miami moved to sign him on Saturday. That created a potentially awkward situation, with the 2016 first-round pick now on the same team as a receiver he has repeatedly feuded with.
However, Apple told reporters Sunday that he and Hill had buried the hatchet.
“His locker is literally right across from mine,” Apple said.

The timing of McAfee’s lucrative signing and the layoffs made for a bit of awkwardness that the former NFL punter tried to smooth over.
On Sunday, though, an ill-conceived joke once again brought McAfee more criticism.

Arthur Smith runs a tight ship — even for reporters.
The Atlanta Falcons head coach fined a beat writer $500 for missing the first two days of Training Camp.
As a joke, of course.
Smith opened Friday’s news conference by handing D. Orlando Ledbetter — a writer for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution — a letter scolding him for his absence.

Here is the official fine for @DOrlandoAJC, I am CRYING that Arthur Smith actually made this letter https://t.co/jczH696v9A pic.twitter.com/KCP4Lc1tAX

After the Mets traded veteran starting pitcher Max Scherzer to the Rangers on Saturday, Justin Verlander admitted he’s reassessing his future with the organization.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday after throwing 5.1 innings in a win against the Nationals, Verlander addressed the team’s decision to offload Scherzer ahead of MLB’s trade deadline.
The 40-year-old admitted he was “a bit surprised” by the departure of both Scherzer, who agreed to waive his no-trade clause to join the Rangers, and veteran reliever David Robertson, who was dealt to the rival Marlins.
