Former Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard called it a career Wednesday night, abruptly announcing his retirement after four games with the Indianapolis Colts.
“When I was away from the game in 2024, I fell in love with taking my kids to school, doing activities with them and watching them grow up,” a statement posted by Howard reads, in part. “Up to that point I had always put my family after football. I’m no longer willing to do so. So today I am retiring from the National Football League.

There were a few times that Viktor Gyokeres would have believed on this night that his first Arsenal Champions League goal was just a moment away, although by the end of 90 minutes he and his team-mates were still trying to secure the win.
Eventually it was done two minutes into time added on by the substitute Bukayo Saka, sent on by Mikel Arteta to finish off an Olympiacos team that had proved unexpectedly robust.
Colts cornerback Xavien Howard was listed as a non-participant in Wednesday’s practice for personal reasons. That reason was later revealed.
Howard has decided to retire.
The Colts announced they placed Howard on the reserve/retired list.
They signed safety Trey Washington to the 53-player roster from the practice squad in a corresponding move.
In the loss to the Rams, Howard allowed seven completions in 10 attempts when he was the closest defender and those completions went for 112 yards and a touchdown, per Next Gen Stats.
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Detroit Tigers kept coming to bat with runners in scoring position in Game 2 of their AL Wild Card Series against the Cleveland Guardians.
With one exception, they failed to come through, paving the way for Cleveland’s 6-1 victory that evened the best-of-three series Wednesday. The Tigers had a franchise postseason-record 15 men left on base, going 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position. Javier Báez accounted for the lone hit in the fourth, singling off Guardians starter Tanner Bibee to score All-Star outfielder Riley Greene.
The Atlanta Falcons are off this week for their bye, which gives general manager Terry Fontenot some extra time to evaluate and potentially upgrade the roster before the team returns in Week 6. The Falcons don’t have a ton of tradeable assets, but Kirk Cousins is one clear candidate.
The veteran quarterback lost his job last season and is currently serving as the NFL’s highest-paid backup behind Michael Penix Jr. As injuries pile up around the league, the more likely it is for Atlanta to swing a deal before next month’s trade deadline.
The ‘Dawgs have Yara and Nathan, in the words of that goddess of the gridiron Mariah Carey, feeling emotions deeper than they’ve ever dreamed of.
Among the items on this week’s menu:
The dangers of horizontal nepotism. Is Kirby really frustrated with his defensive coaches? If not, why not?
Nathan, loose in Sanford Stadium observing things.
Cross-cultural wedding discussions and a Marietta restaurant recommendation.
The unique frustration of losing a close game that statistically you absolutely could (should?) have won.
