The NBA Playoffs kicked off this weekend, and it was a reminder that the WNBA has something to teach its counterpart league.
The NBA Playoffs officially started over the weekend, kicking off what will end up being about two and a half months of postseason basketball. In theory, that’s very fun, but some of the opening games got me thinking about a few things the NBA can take from the WNBA to make their playoffs more thrilling.

In the final Draft Wire mock, Jeff Risdon has the Lions trading up to select Josh Simmons OT of Ohio State. This is a high-ceiling pick as he could be an elite OT who would serve as a high-quality backup in the short-term and take over for Taylor Decker in the long-term.
What complicates the situation is that Decker recently signed a 3-year extension in the 2024 offseason that ends after the 2027 season. The Lions could move on from Decker after 2025 with a $9.4 million dead cap hit and after 2026 with a $6.3 million dead cap hit.

The New York Times published more than 10,000 words about former San Jose State volleyball player Blaire Fleming over the weekend. Fleming is a biological male who identifies as a woman, who competed on the women’s team and who helped make the Spartans one of the top teams in their conference.
Buried deep in the story was a single paragraph that should raise some eyebrows. The author mentions Joanna Harper, a biological male who identifies as a woman and purportedly studies transgender athletes.  But that’s not the interesting part.

If the opening night was anything to go by, it looked as if Burnley’s return to the Premier League at the first time of asking was inevitable. It was Scott Parker’s first game in charge, a tricky trip to Luton, who had dropped down with the Clarets. One team had enjoyed a summer of continuity whereas everything had changed at Turf Moor but it was Burnley who left with a dominant 4-1 victory.
