Kate Merriman didn’t let rainy skies wash away her resolve.
The Claremore junior battled through a challenging 18-hole round to finish in the top third of the field Monday at the OSSAA Class 5A Girls State Championship at Lincoln Park Golf Course in Oklahoma City. Merriman carded a 91 — good for 25th place out of 72 golfers — before the second round was washed out by rain Tuesday, shortening the tournament to just one round.

The wait to begin postseason play will last one more day for Claremore baseball.
Due to heavy rain and soggy field conditions at Legendary Legion Field at Murray-Pixley Park, the start of the Class 5A East Regional 8 tournament has been postponed to Thursday. The Zebras, the host and top seed, now begin their playoff run at 11 a.m. Thursday against Nathan Hale.
Claremore (28-9) is seeking its first state tournament berth since 2019 and will need three wins to claim the regional title.

There was no catching Claremore’s boys track-and-field team last Friday.
Fueled by a flood of event victories and top finishes, the Zebras ran away with the Metro Lakes Conference championship at Tahlequah High School, scoring 193.25 points — a staggering 89.25 points ahead of runner-up Collinsville — to secure the team title in commanding fashion.
Marcus Bean emerged as the standout of the meet, winning three individual events and anchoring a dominant 4×400-meter relay finish.
Bean cleared 6 feet, 6 inches to win the high jump, leapt 22-04 to claim the long jump and raced to a 41.

CHICAGO — Chicago Stars striker Mallory Swanson and her husband, Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson, announced Wednesday in a joint Instagram post that they’re expecting their first child.
Mallory Swanson hasn’t played this season after the Stars released a statement Jan. 27 that she wouldn’t be participating in training camp for “personal reasons.” In that same statement, Swanson thanked the National Women’s Soccer League club and its fans “for their understanding during this time.
