The Oakland A’s and NBC Sports California appear to be in damage control mode, even when they probably don’t need to be. It all centers on A’s announcer Glen Kuiper. The veteran announcer has reportedly been suspended after he inadvertently used a racial slur during a recent broadcast while talking about a visit to the Negro League’s Baseball Museum in Kansas City.
The incident occurred during Friday night’s broadcast of the A’s-Royals game. Kuiper was talking about the museum after visiting it during the A’s trip to Kansas City.

The National Soccer Hall of Fame announced a special honor on Saturday in recognition of the incredible career of renowned soccer journalist and former Sports Illustrated senior writer Grant Wahl, who died unexpectedly at age 49 in December.
Wahl, a member of SI’s staff from 1996 to 2021, received an official induction into the NSHOF as the recipient of the 2023 Colin Jose Media Award.

The Kentucky Derby is not off to its best start.
Multiple reports broke Saturday that Kentucky Derby favorite Forte was scratched just a few hours before post time. Another horse, Chloe’s Dream, was euthanized after running an earlier race.
Forte’s co-owner reacted during an interview, “This is part of racing and it’s the cruel part,” Mike Repole said.
That withdrawal was the fifth scratch prior to the start of the race Saturday afternoon. Even more concerning was that Chloe’s Dream contributed to a rash of deaths in the lead up to the event.

You’d be forgiven for thinking you were experiencing a round of deja vu, but yes, once again, someone is asking the NFL team located in Washington to change its name, this time from the Washington Commanders to anything else.
Danny Rouhier, a radio host for Washington, D.C.’s 106.7 The Fan, went on an extended rant about why the Commanders’ next owner — presumably a group led by billionaire Josh Harris — needs to scrap that moniker, which is only just over a year old.
Rouhier pointed to a column from The Washington Post’s John Feinstein which argued in favor of a change.

For the first time since 2015, the Cowboys are set to enter a season without Ezekiel Elliott on the team. Dallas released the running back earlier in the offseason, and Elliott remains unsigned on the open market while the Cowboys have move forward with other options.
At the moment, the Cowboys have Tony Pollard, Malik Davis, Ronald Jones and recently drafted Deuce Vaughn on the running back depth chart. However, Cowboys hall of fame running back Emmitt Smith still thinks there is room for a reunion between Dallas and Elliott.

The two-time world champion completed his final practice session in 1:27.535, topping Charles Leclerc by 0.406 seconds to lead all drivers entering qualifying for Sunday’s race at Miami International Autodrome in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Verstappen owns victories in two of Formula One’s four races this season, having won in Bahrain and Australia. He sat on the pole in both those races and recorded the fastest lap in Saudi Arabia.

The Ole Miss football program dismissed highly-touted wide receiver Chris Marshall before he ever played a game for the Rebels.
Marshall was one of the highest-profile transfer additions this cycle.
Marshall’s ousting was announced in a brief statement released by the program.
“Chris Marshall has been dismissed from the Ole Miss football program for violation of team rules. We wish him good luck in his future plans,” it reads.
For the time being, there is no word on what rule or rules Marshall broke that led to his dismissal.
