Technically, Michigan covered the 2.5-point spread with its three-point win over UC San Diego on Thursday night. Anyone who took the Wolverines to cover the spread would have cashed out, but it sure didn’t seem as if Michigan played well enough — especially in the second half — to cover anything.
Regardless, U-M is through to the Round of 32 with its 68-65 win over the UC San Diego Tritons. Vlad Goldin led Michigan in scoring with 14 points, and Tre Donaldson and Roddy Gayle Jr. both finished in double figures, as well.

The first full day of the 2025 men’s NCAA tournament is over. Here’s your updated bracket.
The McNeese Cowboys pulled the biggest upset of Thursday at the 2025 men’s NCAA tournament. The UC San Diego Tritons nearly joined them, but their game-tying at the buzzer against Michigan fell short. March Madness is underway, and it’s already producing thrilling action and setting up even more exciting matchups in the round of 32.
Thursday at the NCAA tournament saw favorites mostly hold serve.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 28 points and the Milwaukee Bucks defeated the short-handed Los Angeles Lakers 118-89 on Thursday night.
Gary Trent Jr. had 23 points off the bench, Kyle Kuzma added 20 and the Bucks swept the season series with two comfortable wins eight days apart.
Bronny James had 17 points to reach double figures for the first time in 22 NBA games, but the Lakers had their nine-game home winning streak snapped.
Los Angeles was without its top four scorers and five of its top six.

The first round of the men’s NCAA tournament is in the books. While a full slate of games will wrap up the round on Friday, we’re already looking ahead to the start of the second round on Saturday.
There are a few key matchups in that slate, including a battle between Rick Pitino and John Calipari. The two longtime coaches will square off for the 24th time in history when St. John’s and Arkansas meet in Providence.
Auburn, the top seed in the tournament, will take on Creighton on Saturday and Michigan and Texas A&M will square off, too.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Jimmy Butler had 18 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists for his second triple-double with Golden State, and the Warriors held on to beat the Toronto Raptors 117-114 on Thursday night after Stephen Curry left the game with an injury.
Curry, who was held out of Tuesday’s win over the Milwaukee Bucks to get rest, did not play the final 15 minutes after suffering a pelvic contusion. Curry was going for a rebound and got undercut before crashing hard to the floor. He remained down for several moments before getting helped to the locker room. He finished with 17 points.

Michigan overcame a rough second half and rallied late to beat the UC San Diego Tritons, 68-65, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines led by as many as 15 points in the second half, but a pair of Vlad Goldin free throws late in the game secured the win for Michigan.
To open the first half, UC San Diego looked to have the talent level of a collection of middle schoolers. The Tritons couldn’t were unable to score in the game’s first five minutes, while the height and length of Vlad Goldin and Danny Wolf gave UC San Diego fits.

Down their top four scorers on Thursday against the Milwaukee Bucks, the Los Angeles Lakers turned to Bronny James, among other players. It didn’t go particularly well for the team, but James at least got to enjoy a career night.
The son of LeBron James logged 17 points, the first double-digit game of his career, on 7-of-10 shooting with five assists, three rebounds and four turnovers 30 minutes in a 118-89 loss to Milwaukee.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Mauricio Pochettino took over the U.S. men’s national team last year with the goal of getting it ready to thrive at its home World Cup in 2026.
Six months into Pochettino’s project, the Americans don’t appear to be any closer to that goal after getting stunned yet again by plucky Panama.
The U.S. lost 1-0 in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals Thursday night on a goal in the fourth minute of second-half injury time by Cecilio Waterman.
