May 10—BROOKINGS — The USD softball team just refused to give in all weekend at the Summit League tournament, but after pushing top-seeded Omaha to the brink with a deciding rubber game in Saturday’s finals, the Coyote magic finally ran out in a 4-2 loss to the Mavericks.
For the third straight year, Omaha will represent the Summit League in the NCAA tournament. The Coyotes season ends at 32-24.
USD opened the tournament with an 8-3 win over Kansas City, then fell in 13 innings to rival and host South Dakota State, putting them on the brink of elimination.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou dropped another flawless performance in the Sonsio Grand Prix — a race that featured the IndyCar Series’ first caution since lap one at the season-opening race in St. Petersburg — which means he has won four of the first five races of the season.
And the one he lost? That was the Long Beach Grand Prix in which he finished second to Andretti Global’s Kyle Kirkwood.

A year ago at Kansas Speedway, Kyle Larson beat Chris Buescher in the closest finish in a Cup race, nipping him by .001 seconds.
Saturday, Larson beat Buescher for the pole for Sunday’s Cup race at Kansas by .057 seconds.
“Pretty ironic,” Larson told Prime of beating Buescher by a narrow margin again at Kansas, although this time it was for the pole.

Larson earned his first pole of the season and 22nd of his career with a lap of 183.730 mph.
Buescher qualified second for his best start of the season with a lap of 183.374 mph.

The Boston Celtics entered Game 3 in their series against the New York Knicks down 2-0. It’s fair to say that it was a must-win for them going into New York. The Celtics not only won but also kept their composure and beat the Knicks, 115-93.
While the Celtics should be glad to finally notch a victory in this series, what makes it harder is that they were up by exactly 20 in their two previous playoff matchups, then just barely blew both to lose Games 1 and 2 in the fourth quarter.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Andre Pallante took a shutout into the eighth inning in the second-longest outing of his career, and the St. Louis Cardinals extended their winning streak to seven with a 4-2 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday.
Ryan Helsley allowed the Nationals to load the bases in the ninth but retired CJ Abrams on a first-pitch flyball for his seventh save in nine chances.
