A new NHL season is upon us, which means it’s time for a lot of firsts. First games, first goals, or, in the case of Los Angeles Kings rookie Alex Laferriere, first fight.
And, boy, oh boy, was his family fired up for his first NHL tilt.
The Kings opened their season by playing host to a team a lot of folks think could be one of the Cup favorites this year, the Colorado Avalanche.
In the second period with the Kings trailing 3-1, a slight disagreement in front of the penalty boxes broke out.

NBA awards races will include a new wrinkle this upcoming season: a minimum games played requirement.
Players are required to be on the floor for at least 20 minutes for a minimum of 65 games in order to qualify for individual honors, such as All-NBA and MVP. That could make things interesting in a league in which rest has become rampant to the point that new rules have been implemented aimed at curtailing load management.
This new requirement would have altered the Defensive Player of the Year race last season as Jaren Jackson Jr. appeared in only 63 games.

Former Cowboys and Oklahoma State running back Walt Garrison died Wednesday night at the age of 79, the Cowboys announced Thursday morning.
Garrison played for Dallas from 1966-74, amassing 3,886 yards on the ground in his nine-year career. The Denton, Tex. native is currently ninth on Dallas’s all-time rushing leaderboard.
Garrison won Super Bowl VI with the Cowboys in 1972, and was selected to his only Pro Bowl as a fullback after rushing for a career-high seven touchdowns the following season. His lifetime average of 4.3 yards per carry ranks in the top 100 all-time.

Stricker’s golf blood runs deep and his daughter Izzi showed what kind of game she has, winning another state championship.
Izzi Stricker added another piece of hardware to the Stricker trophy case as she won her second straight Wisconsin Girls State Championship. Steve Stricker has had a strong season on the Champions Tour, but it was all about one of his daughters this time.
Izzi went 71-73 to win by two strokes over her competitors to win the individual title. She also led her team to a runner-up finish.

ESPN’s Pat McAfee brought his hit television show over to the network as part of his five-year, $85 million contract that he signed earlier this year.
The Pat McAfee Show has become must-see TV, as the former NFL punter-turned-media mogul has landed recurring weekly interviews with Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Alabama coach Nick Saban.
While it’s clear that Rodgers and Saban both have an immense amount of respect for McAfee, we now know why they appear on ESPN on a weekly basis.
They’re paid. Handsomely.

The Diamondbacks won Game 3 on Wednesday night to sweep the Dodgers, in large part thanks to a huge third inning. Arizona hit four home runs off Lance Lynn in one inning, becoming the first team in MLB history to do that in the postseason.
Arizona’s rally started when No. 9 hitter Geraldo Perdomo hit a solo shot, and he was followed by Ketel Marte, Christian Walker and Gabriel Moreno all doing the same. Outfielder Tommy Pham, who grounded out in the middle of the inning, humorously described what it was like to watch the big inning from his teammates.
