HOUSTON (AP) — Rookie Cam Smith homered on his first two at-bats and had a career-best four RBIs to power the Houston Astros to a 6-4 win over the San Diego Padres on Friday night.
Smith connected off Kyle Hart (2-1) on a three-run homer in the second inning to put the Astros on top and added a solo shot off the lefty in the fourth that made it 5-2.
San Diego’s Luis Arraez, who had three hits, sent a high fastball from Bryan King into the first row in right field for a two-run homer that cut the lead to 5-4 in the seventh.

For the first time in the six-year history of the NBA Play-In Tournament, a 10-seed has clinched a playoff spot.
The Miami Heat toppled the Atlanta Hawks in overtime Friday night, 123-114, to secure the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. And with that, Miami will face the Cleveland Cavaliers, who led the East with 64 victories, in the first round.
Tyler Herro led all players with 30 points on 10-of-21 shooting, while Andrew Wiggins chipped in 20 points.

The other is making an early case to win one of his own.
For years, Jacob deGrom has (when healthy) been the gold standard of major league pitching. He has a career ERA of 2.54. He is a four-time All-Star and two-time strikeout king. In 2018 and 2019, he won back-to-back Cy Young honors.

When the North Carolina Tar Heels hired Bill Belichick as their new head coach, there were any number of questions as to how the 73-year-old would do in college.
Recruiting high schools and transfer portal players is completely different than anything Belichick dealt with while with the New England Patriots and in the NFL. Then there’s dealing with university boosters; instead of answering to just owner Robert Kraft, Belichick would have to keep big-dollar donors happy. 
Of course, there’s also a whole new staff of people to deal with.

The Oklahoma Sooners were dealt a major blow on Friday evening when news broke that defensive lineman David Stone had entered the transfer portal. Pete Nakos of On3 Sports reported that the former five-star prospect would be leaving OU in search of his next team.
Stone was a gigantic recruiting win for head coach Brent Venables in the 2024 recruiting cycle. The No. 9 overall player in On3’s industry rankings chose to come to Norman as a building block for Oklahoma up front on defense. Now, he’ll leave the Sooners after just one season in crimson and cream.

NEW YORK (AP) — Francisco Lindor homered off Ryan Fernandez leading off the ninth inning, and the New York Mets survived a late blown lead to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 on Friday night.
Brendan Donovan had homered off Huascar Brazobán (1-0) starting the the top of the ninth, tying it at 4 with a drive off the netting of the right field foul pole.
Lindor drove a cutter on the third pitch from Fernandez (0-2) into the right field second deck for his 250th homer and his first walk-off homer with the Mets.
