Apr. 10—BROOKINGS — South Dakota State football’s Spring Game is set for Saturday, and as the first month of practices under new coach Dan Jackson wind down, the new staff has a better handle on what they have and how to use it.
While a significant chunk of players from last year’s 12-win team graduated, followed former coach Jimmy Rogers to Washington State or transferred elsewhere, a strong nucleus is still intact, and the Jacks have made several promising additions in the transfer portal.

The Oregon Ducksspring football game has always been much more than football.
A lot of it involves collecting canned food for Lane County, and some of it involves welcoming legends from the past to be guest coaches. This year is no different, as the Ducks announced they will have four legends back inside Autzen Stadium on April 26.
On one sideline will be former coach Mike Bellotti and former player Christian Gonzalez, who currently plays for the New England Patriots. But the other sideline isn’t exactly hurting for coaching and on-the-field talent.
Whenever someone retires, he or she will always say that you need to have something to keep you busy. For Baseball Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. — who last played in an MLB game back in 2010 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2016 — that is sports photography.
And this week, he was at the Masters to snag some shots at one of the biggest golf tournaments of the year.
Apr. 10—Todd Wing has decided to step down as boys basketball coach at Deering High after 12 seasons as the Rams’ head coach and 17 with the program.
Wing, 48, will continue to be a physical education teacher at Reiche Elementary School in Portland.
“My rationale is I’ve had a great run and I’ve always been a coach and will probably always be a coach,” Wing said Thursday morning. “This year my son (Ronan Wing) is a senior in high school.
The Masters
Rory McIlroy looked destined to make a run at the first round lead and then made a grave mistake late.
AUGUSTA, Ga. — The Golden Bear knows a thing or two about Augusta National. After all, Jack Nicklaus won The Masters six times and made 52 starts during his illustrious career.
So when he picked Rory McIlroy to win earlier on Thursday morning, it came as no surprise. Both Gary Player and Tom Watson picked him to complete the career Grand Slam, something he has been trying to do for 11 years now.
The West Virginia football program has landed another versatile piece on the defensive side of the ball with a commitment from Springfield (Oh.) 2026 athlete Taj Powell.
Powell, 6-foot-3, 195-pounds, picked the Mountaineers over an offer from Kentucky.
The Rivals.com three-star prospect received an offer from West Virginia Jan. 24 and things only picked up from that point with multiple visits to Morgantown including most recently March 27 for an unofficial visit.
