The turf at the stadium that will World Cup final on July 19 is already sparking debate after just a few games and there’s been question whether the arena in East Rutherford was the most appropriate choice for the big match.
It feels more like artificial turf, said French midfielder Adrien Rabiot, while several other players and coaches noted that the surface is particularly hard.
FIFA told dpa that the playing fields at all 16 World Cup stadiums are “in excellent condition, both in terms of playability and player safety.

Two years to the day since Régis Le Bris was appointed as Sunderland manager, I want to express my sincere gratitude for what he has given us over the last two seasons in charge.
Pain, misery and heartbreak often comes with the territory of being a football fan, but for Sunderland supporters, the last eight years have been torturous. So the fact that we are planning trips away to Europe next season is a testament to the man.

In May 2024, Sunderland finished a disappointing season in 16th place in the Championship, slumping to a 2-0 home defeat against Sheffield Wednesday.

INGLEWOOD, California — Mexico‘s hospitality for Iran‘s World Cup team has not gone unnoticed. Or unappreciated.
Midfielder Alireza Jahanbakhsh made a point of thanking the people of Mexico, which welcomed Iran after they were forced to relocate their training camp from Tucson, Arizona. Iran is based in Tijuana, Mexico, and flies to the United States for its games.
“We love Mexican people. I think everyone has the same feeling,” Jahanbakhsh said after Iran held Belgium to a 0-0 draw on Sunday, June 21, keeping its hopes of making the knockout rounds alive.
Mohamed Salah scored a goal and assisted another as Egypt defeated New Zealand 3-1 to claim their first-ever World Cup win on Sunday.
New Zealand thought they would be the ones celebrating a maiden victory at the tournament as Finn Surman gave them the lead in the 15th minute.
Surman rose high to power home a corner from the team’s social media rising star Tim Payne.
But Mustafa Zico levelled for Egypt in the 58th. He collected a cross from Mohamed Hany and headed it into the goal. Goalkeeper Max Crocombe got a hand to it but wasn’t strong enough to stop it.
CORONADO, Calif. (AP) — Corey Heim slammed into the wall twice while destroying his tires during the first few runs Sunday in the inaugural NASCAR race at Naval Base Coronado.
It was no problem for Heim, whose No. 67 Toyota inexplicably kept getting faster on the way to his first career Cup Series victory in only his 13th start.
The 23-year-old part-time driver from Marietta, Georgia, took a deep breath before the second half of the race and reminded himself that he had as much experience as the veterans on the 16-turn, 3.
