The on-field action was memorable, but nothing compared to college football’s off-field antics in 2023. We chose 10 unforgettable stories —
including a coach (or two) we can’t look away from.
The NFL has long been established as a sport with year-round interest. From the Super Bowl to the draft, offseason trades and the playoff push, these are the moments that mattered.
Whatever was left under your tree for Christmas this year almost certainly checked in as a distant second to what one NFL bettor received for the holiday. After rolling out a $5 parlay with 14 total plays, 13 of which had hit going into Monday night’s game between the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers, the man needed just one thing to turn $5 into $489,383.01.
A Christian McCaffrey touchdown.
While the 49ers ultimately lost 33-19 to the Ravens, fortunately, the bettor only needed until just before halftime for his dream scenario to unfold.
The “Golden Era” of The Simpsons has been over for 25 years, but don’t think for a second that the long-running animated sitcom can’t still show some teeth. This weekend, those teeth were turned on Michigan Wolverines head football coach Jim Harbaugh.
The series is in the midst of its 35th season, and on Christmas Eve, a new episode premiered called “Do The Wrong Thing.” The episode kicks off with Grampa Simpson retiring from his illustrious competitive fishing career (I know; that had nothing to do with any of the previous 750+ episodes, but whatevs).
Coastal Carolina football coach Tim Beck claims it was his decision to delete a photo with bikini-clad dancers at the beach.
The Chanticleers made waves online ahead of a bowl game against San Jose State when the team tweeted a photo of Beck shirtless on the beach with the team’s mascot and members of the program’s dance team in bikinis.
It didn’t take long for the post to start going viral, but a decision was made to delete it without explanation. It was a classic Streisand Effect playing out in front of the college football world in real-time.
Coco Gauff was all of 19 years old. And though already a bona fide star—offering a harmonious marriage of power, speed, athleticism, strategy and poise—it would not have been hard for her to hear the salon getting restless, awaiting a breakthrough once deemed inevitable.
As she took the court, she was barely two months past Wimbledon, where she flamed out in the first round. And working with a new coach, Brad Gilbert, whose sterling reputation preceded him but whose addition to her team—causing her parents to take a backseat—added pressure.
Brock Purdy had a night to forget in the San Francisco 49ers’ 33—19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Monday, but teammate George Kittle hasn’t wavered in his faith in his quarterback.
After the game, the veteran tight end had a short and sweet message to Purdy: Keep slingin’ it.
Kittle said, “I just kept telling Brock, ‘Just keep slinging it, man.’ We’re the No. 1 seed in the NFC for a reason: because you sling the ball, you get it to our playmakers in space.”
Kittle hasn’t lost faith in Purdy and told the young QB to “keep slingin’ it” pic.
Let us gather to celebrate, not to mourn. But here lies the men’s tennis GOAT debate. Oh, it was a hell of a run, and what fun it generated. This was a spirited discussion that crossed borders and eras, at once unifying and cleaving a sport’s fan base. It took a sinuous path, following the zigs and zags of on-court results. It asked us all to contemplate the essential—and extraneous—ingredients of sports greatness. But now it has come to its eternal resting place. May its memory be a blessing. Cue the organ music.
Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson did a victory lap after his team’s dominant win over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night and didn’t do so quietly. While on X, formerly known as Twitter, Jackson saw how his team highlighted a clip from Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio where he said that San Francisco was going to “kick the s–t out of Baltimore” and decided to have some fun with it.
