There’s still another seven weeks before most leagues open their fantasy playoffs. A lot can happen between now and the end of the 2023 season, but the first eight weeks have at least allowed us to make some definitive observations.
We’ll wait until the season’s over to hand out our awards, but we’ve asked out team of fantasy experts to offer up their top five candidates — so far — for best fantasy rookie, best waiver wire addition, biggest bust and MVP.
Some picks are obvious; others quite surprising.
Police are investigating the death of former NHL player Adam Johnson.
Johnson was killed during a Saturday Elite Ice Hockey League game in the United Kingdom between his team Nottingham Panther and the Sheffield Steelers.
The former NHL player was hit in the neck by Matt Petgrave’s skate, and later died from the injury. He initially attempted to skate off the ice, but the blood loss and damage was too severe. We’re not sharing the video due to the insanely graphic nature of it, but it can be found on social media.
The first half of the 2023 fantasy football season is now behind us, and we’ve seen a number of players either exceed expectations or come out of nowhere to lead our squads on the road to the playoffs. Five players in particular have been at the top of the statistical mountain, making their cases to be named our first-half fantasy MVP.

Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles would quite possibly tilt the decision — a win convincing the club brain trust to hold fast on trading away talent, while a loss likely convincing leadership it’s time to think about the future.
The Chicago Bears were blown out by the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night, losing 30-13 in a game that never felt that close. They are now 2-6 on the season and are still without starting quarterback Justin Fields, who remains out with a thumb injury that he suffered in Week 6.
Undrafted rookie QB Tyson Bagent got his second start against the Chargers and while at times he looked OK, he threw zero TD passes and had two interceptions in the loss.
Nikola Jokic matched up against Chet Holmgren for the first time on Sunday night and while the reigning MVP was impressed by the rookie’s game, he did walk away thinking one thing about the 21-year-old and it’s the same thing most think about Holmgren: he’s too skinny.
In peak Jokic fashion, he didn’t advise Holmgren to ‘bulk up’ or ‘add muscle’ in order to prepare himself for battles down low in the NBA, he simply said the 21-year-old needs to get fatter.
